Why I Ride ...
When I set out on a bike ride with 35 friends to raise money for the Jimmy Fund in 1980, I did not know I was embarking on a project that would become my life's work. Nor did I know that, 42 years later, that the organization I created would generate $767 million for cancer research.
This year's PMC is 8,000 riders and volunteers,300,000 annual donors plus another 200 corporate sponsors, all committed to the same mission my friends and I had so many years ago. The PMC has evolved from a grassroots organization to the nation's most successful athletic fundraising event without ever losing sight of its origin or intentions.
I am proud to say the model on which the PMC is built assures that the money raised through the sweat and commitment of PMC riders significantly supports the innovative cancer-ending research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. The PMC contributes 100% of all rider raised revenue directly to the Dana-Farber for 15 consecutive years. The funds from this year's $52 million goal will also account for 60 percent of all annual Jimmy Fund revenue.
The feeling one gets when connected spiritually and physically to thousands of other like-minded cyclists is inspiring and is equaled only by the peace of mind born of the knowledge that each mile pedaled brings us all miles closer to a cure. As the PMC embarks upon its 42nd year, I have the deepest gratitude for our many returning riders and look forward to welcoming newcomers into the PMC family.
The PMC is the annual journey of those physically and emotionally dedicated to improving the quality of life for all. If you will support my fundraising goal, please use one of the links on this page to make your donation now. All transactions are secure and THE most cost-effective way to give money to charity.
Sincerely,
Billy Starr
