We all know the devastation cancer leaves in its wake, and unfortunately it has touched all of our lives in some way. Alexis and I have lost a Grandmother, an Aunt, two Uncles and her Father to cancers of various types. Their lives were all cut painfully short, with adoring family and many loved ones left behind.
Two years ago, we lost our close friend and neighbor, Ted Preston, to pancreatic cancer. Ted was a role model as a father and a husband and just a remarkable person in every way. Like so many, he died in the prime of his life and left behind an incredible wife, Beth (a recent cancer survivor!) and three wonderful kids (Sarah, Grace and Jack). They are about the same age as our own kids and around the same ages as Alexis’s brothers and sister when her father passed away, which only amplifies the incredible loss.
When I heard that Beth was organizing a PMC team, I could think of no better way to honor Ted and all of our loved ones who have battled cancer, than to join Ted’s Unicorns and help fight this awful disease.
Early detection of pancreatic cancer continues to be a huge barrier to improving outcomes. As is the case with over 80% of pancreatic cancer patients, Ted’s cancer was not diagnosed until it had already reached Stage 4. Once again, Ted’s Unicorns will be raising money to fund research aimed at providing better screening and treatment options for pancreatic cancer. Every dollar raised will go directly to support the research of Brian Wolpin, MD, MPH, director of Dana-Farber’s Gastrointestinal Cancer Center and Hale Center for Pancreatic Cancer Research. (Here is a link to a recent article about Dr. Wolpin’s work: https://blog.dana-farber.org/insight/2018/09/finding-new-avenues-treating-pancreatic-cancer/). Last year Ted's Unicorns raised over $70K dollars to support his research thanks to donors like you!!
This year's ride is being re-imagined and in honor of our friend Ted, I'm taking my ride off road and will spend the day Mountain Biking in the Fell's Preservation here in Winchester where we used to ride with Ted. He'll be with us in spirit, no doubt, and I'm asking you to join me on this ride as well by making a donation to the fight against pancreatic cancer. 100% of every dollar will go directly toward research that can bring us closer to a cure.
Thanks in advance for your support!!
Brent (and the rest of Ted’s Unicorns)
