Dear Friends and Family,
Next month, for the 12th consecutive year, I will be participating in the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC). I will be bicycling 50 miles through the hills of Massachusetts along with over 6,000 cyclists in the 44th annual PMC. I am committed to raising at least $3000 this year for the Jared Branfman Sunflowers for Life Fund for cancer research and care at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) in Boston, MA.
While in college, my cousin Jared was diagnosed with a spinal tumor in 2003. After 2 1/2 years of treatment, rehab, and surgeries, he passed away in 2005 at the very young age of 23. Soon thereafter, Jared's parents started the Jared Branfman Sunflowers for Life Fund, which is at the forefront of cancer research and finding the cure. This research has allowed a boy who was diagnosed with Jared's identical condition a few years ago to become a surviving, thriving 16 year old young man, who is also riding to raise funds for further research, so that other cancer patients can become cancer survivors as he has.
Over the past 11 years, I have raised over $21,900 and rode over 450 miles on PMC weekends (plus hundreds more miles of training to prepare for these weekends). For the many of you who have donated so generously to my ride in past years, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
As is the case for so many of us, I have also lost other family and friends to cancer including my paternal grandmother to breast cancer. More recently, I lost my step-aunt to breast cancer when her conditions worsened just a few days after retiring to Florida with her husband and child in the fall of 2020. And just last year, the 53-year-old mother to 4 wonderful young adults (all of whom I taught) succumbed to cancer.
The PMC raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country, over 800 million dollars since 1980! This success is the result of a lot of people riding for, and caring about, a cure. And because every penny matters, 100 percent of your donation goes to DFCI. All donations are tax deductible and 100% will go to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
