Growing up, I spent one weekend every summer at the Captain Quarters Motel in Cape Cod. My Mom would drive Ben, Sara and me to meet my Dad at the finish line of his annual adventure, the Pan Mass Challenge. The PMC was a 100+ mile bike ride, which I thought my Dad was a superhuman for completing. As a kid, I always said I wanted to follow in my Dad’s footsteps and ride the PMC when I grew up. But as I got older and lazier, the thought of riding a bike that far seemed impossible and definitely not for me.
In August of 2020, right around the time when the PMC typically happens, I got a phone call that changed my family’s life. The rock of our family, my Mom, had been diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer. The first few days were a scramble for us. Trying to figure out where to get my mom the best care, how to get her in to see the best specialists, figuring out how to schedule physical therapy, and so much more. We were fortunate enough to quickly get my mom care at Dana Farber in Boston, and from this point on, I watched my mom fight with all her will. Four years later, and my mom runs, babysits, travels, and most importantly, she fights. All of this is possible because of her attitude and the tremendous care that she receives from the team at Dana Farber. From the parking lot attendants to some the most renowned doctors in the world, everyone at Dana Farber is committed to making their patients as comfortable as possible.
So back to that bike ride my Dad used to do for 20 years. Turns out it was for Dana Farber and the Jimmy Fund. Reflecting back, I realized that my Dad was not only just riding his bike an annoyingly far amount, but also he was raising money for an amazing cause. He was raising money for Pediatric and Adult Cancer patients and their families, for breakthrough cancer research, and he was fighting for hope for the far too many people impacted by cancer every day.
Last year, I got in the saddle and rode from Wellesley to Bourne. It was one of the most rewarding and inspirational days of my life. For as long as I am able, I plan on huffing and puffing through the PMC while raising as much money as I possibly can so that everyone impacted by cancer will have the best resources to fight like hell.
I greatly appreciate any support you can give to this crucial and personal cause.
