Why I Ride ...

In just a few weeks I will, once again, saddle up my bike to ride in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge. Last year, I rode the one-day, 84-mile route, from Wellesley to Bourne. I rode for over 5 hours and raised over $3,200 for the Jimmy Fund. This year, I will ride 153 miles over two days and have committed to raising $3,400 for the Jimmy Fund.
The ride last year was awesome. Spending a weekend with thousands of people, all working towards the same goal of finding a cure, was truly an incredible experience. Hope and determination ran strong, contagious even, throughout the entire event. The most powerful emotion, however, was the thankfulness the children currently undergoing treatment at Dana Farber showed towards the efforts we put in as riders. I had trained for long hours in the saddle; I had trained for the hills, but this was something I was wholly unprepared for. It made the ride that much more real to me.
The ride wasn’t about numbers and statistics, anymore. The money I had raised wasn’t just going off to some lab somewhere; it was changing the lives of the kids who were lining the route and coaxing us up the big hills. They line the sides of our route, some holding pinwheels, noisemakers and wearing funny hats. Others hold signs that read: “THANK YOU RIDERS! I’M 10 NOW THANKS TO YOU”. The kids are the reason PMC riders (5,500+ last year) and volunteers (3,000+ last year) have been coming together every August for the past 29 years to work ourselves to exhaustion.
This year, I’ve committed to riding 153 miles and raising $3,400 for the PMC. I’d like to ask for your support to help me reach this goal. 100% of every donation goes directly to the Jimmy Fund. Donations are also tax-deductible.
