I am proud to annouce that I am back for a second year riding the PMC! Completing the Wellesley to Bourne, 85 mile ride last August was possibly the most rewarding feeling I have ever experienced. After my cancer diagnosis just a year before that ride, I was inspired to participate in fundraising to help others like me. I was emotional crossing the finish line on August 5th, 2023, at just 16 years old, after spending 8 hours biking 85 miles. I knew that only 381 days prior to that I had just lost my ability to walk, due to my surgery, and it was a healing full circle moment. I was incredibly self empowered. But, seeing that the riders around me still had another day to go gave me motivation to come back this year. I will be participating in the two-day, Wellsley to Provincetown ride. By generously donating to me, you are supporting one of the PMC's youngest riders, and for that I thank you! :)
I am riding because of my personal connection to the Jimmy Fund Clinic at DFCI. In June 2022, I went for my 15-year-old checkup with my pediatrician. My doctor noticed something didn't feel right in my abdomen and sent me for some scans. What should have been a a quick stop on a busy day as I got ready to go to summer camp turned into a full day of testing to figure out what was going on. We discovered a large mass in my abdomen that turned out to be an ovarian teratoma. Three weeks later, I had surgery at Boston Children's Hospital to remove the tumor. It was 20 centimeters wide (8 inches)! Unfortunately, by the time I got the surgery, the tumor was so large that they had to remove my right ovary. We had to wait a couple of weeks for the pathology report, which showed that the tumor had a rare type of cancer inside of it. Now I have a team at Dana-Farber who sends me for an MRI every few months to make sure the tumor does not come back. Teratomas are not uncommon, however, they tend to be benign, so I was a rare case. Thanks to the funding Dana-Farber has, they are able to further research my case so hopefully future patients with tumors like mine will have more information as to why they had cancer. Approaching my 17th birthday this summer, my doctors have let me know that if my next scan comes out clear, I will likely be done needing frequent MRI's! My family and I are so grateful for our team at Children's and the Dana-Farber Jimmy Fund Clinic who work hard to make sure that I am healthy and cancer-free!
Every time we visit the Jimmy Fund clinic I am reminded of all the kids who go there for treatment and how important the funding from the PMC is to keep the clinic and its life-saving research going. The PMC is Dana-Farber’s single largest supporter and is more than 60 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue.
My mom started doing the PMC in 2013 after her friend died from cancer. I never imagined I would join her on the ride but I also never thought I would get cancer! It's a looong ride. I'll be doing 162 miles in two days, doubling what I completed last year and by far the longest bike ride I've ever done. This year I hope to add at least $6K to the total that my mom and her friends on the Turkey Hill Gang team have raised over the past 11 years.
100% of all rider-raised funds go directly to cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber. That means your donation does NOT pay for participation costs (riders pay those directly), or organizational overhead, or fancy marketing, or big salaries. ALL of it goes to fight cancer.
Please join me in supporting the life-saving treatments and research that make a difference in the lives of thousands of patients. Every donation --big or small-- helps!
