While I retired from work in December 2023, I have not retired from the PMC! Volunteering at the PMC waterstop in Franklin last year on Saturday was fun. Many members of Team Eric made PB&J sandwiches, cut fruit, filled hundreds of water bottles for thirsty riders, collected trash, and laughed together! The weather was perfect for our 50 mile ride on Sunday--sunny and cooler. Carl Barnes and I did not have to dodge any thunderstorms like in 2015. Later in the Fall two Team Eric riders, Sam Hoffman and Rob Barnes, participated in a newer PMC event the Unpaved Ride. This is a gravel bike ride, up and down the dirt roads of the Berkshires. It was a challenge and fun!
This August 5 Team Eric members will complete the 2 day ride--Wellesley to Provincetown. Two other Team Eric riders, the Barnes Brothers, will complete the 50 mile ride from Wellesley. Together with you we are raising money for Dana Farber Cancer Research. 100% of your donations goes directly to innovative research by Dr. Richard Stone and Dr. Vincent Ho. Advances in understanding how to make Stem Cell Transplants safer have led to no serious, life threatening, cases of GVHD in the past few years. We ask for your continued support!
Update May 2023: In 2022 Team Eric raised $165,239 for groundbreaking Cancer Research! This brought our total over the past 10 years close to $1 Million! Thank you to all of our supporters. You truly are making a difference in the lives of Cancer patients. Your donations provide the soil and seeds that grow into bigger things. In March Dana Farber received two large grants in areas Team Eric supports: $12 Million to study Graft vs. Host Disease that develops after a stem cell transplant; and, $5 Million to study refractory AML Leukemia. Since 2012 the Eric Chase Fund for Leukemia & Transplant Research has supported work in these areas. Thank you All!
Team Eric was the largest ever last August with 14 riders in the 2-day ride from Sturbridge to Provincetown. It was very hot on Saturday and glorious on Sunday. We all made it to Provincetown to celebrate Team Eric's 10th Anniversary ride. Even though their lives went in many directions, Eric's high school friends, and their families, remained committed to the PMC. As you know, I planned a pause on riding in the PMC this year. One Team Eric rider, Carl Barnes, will complete the 2-day ride this year. Two riders, Alex Leichter & Nicole Aaron, will do the Reimagined Ride. I will be riding in the 50 mile Wellesley-to-Wellesley ride on Sunday. Nikki and I will volunteer on Saturday. We remain committed to Dana Farber and inspired by the PMC.
Update: April 2022--This August Team Eric will be Back in the Saddle for our 10th anniversary PMC. After 2 years of a virtual ride, we will again ride 192 miles Sturbridge to Provincetown. Our Team has 14 riders this year, the most ever. It is 10 years since Eric died in June 2012. Alot has happened in those 10 years both in all of our lives and in the field of Cancer ressearch. Here are a few highlights:
Alot happens in 10 years! Thank you for your support of Team Eric's fundrasing through the PMC. Together we have made a difference in Cancer Research and brought hope to the lives of many people. Best wishes. Don Chase
Original Note June 2013:
Eric Chase, age 21, was diagnosed with AML Leukemia in December 2011. He was initially treated by Dr. Richard Stone of the Dana Farber. The intensive chemotherapy was complicated by a very large bruise/wound on Eric's thigh from a simple skiing fall just before he was diagnosed. Dr. Stone thoughtfully balanced the risks of infection from this injury while degrading Eric's immune system with the essential, but toxic, chemotherapy. This picture of Eric and his dog Maya in March 2012 clearly shows that Dr. Stone and Eric successfully navigated this tightrope!!
Later in March 2012 Eric worked with Dr. Vincent Ho of the Dana Farber to reach for a cure to the AML Leukemia with a stem cell transplant. A 'perfect' 10 out of 10 match was found for Eric. But, he had serious complications from the stem cell transplant and lost 100% of his skin. Dr. Ho stood by Eric's side, as Eric fought for his life. Eric was again on a tightrope fighting infections. But, this time even with Eric's tremendous life spirt and Dr. Ho's dedication and broad medical knowledge, Eric slipped. He died, in our arms, on June 28, 2012.
We have established: The Eric Chase Fund for Leukemia & Transplant Research to honor Eric and to recognize Dr. Richard Stone and Dr. Vincent Ho. The Eric Chase Fund will support Dr. Ho's current medical research in a Phase II clinical trial of a Cancer Vaccine to be used in conjunction with a stem cell transplant to treat AML Leukemia. This research will help us all, by furthering our understanding of the Biology of Cancer.
