How are you and your family and friends doing during this crisis? This year I feel very hesitant to start my PMC fundraising given the stress we’re all under regarding our health and the health and safety of those we love. Some of us are facing financial stress as well.
Back in the ancient history of this past January I committed to once again raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute by riding the Pan Mass Challenge for the 18th time. The picture above is of Carol and our son and his two children meeting me at the ferry in Boston on the Sunday of last-year's ride. This year's ride has been cancelled, but the need to raise the money for the DFCI continues. Thank you for the support you have shown over the past years.
My commitment to fighting cancer won’t take a break, because cancer doesn’t take one. Every year in the United States, 650,000 people die from cancer, and the COVID-19 pandemic creates even greater challenges for cancer patients with compromised immune systems, as well as for the heroes who treat them and search for cures. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is counting on PMC riders like me to deliver the vital funds that allow them to serve the cancer community, regardless of the environment, and 100% of every dollar we raise supports their world-class research and care.
In 2020, our PMC fundraising will also support Dana-Farber’s Emergency Response Fund and help pay for:
Unanticipated additional costs to keep cancer patients safe and prevent infection as they receive lifesaving treatments;
New expenses for telemedicine technology that allows patients and families to visit with their Dana-Farber care team virtually;
Pressing financial strains felt by patients and caregivers who lose employment or experience disruptions in dependent care due to school and other closures;
Flexible funding for research and care due to the cancellation or postponement of hundreds of spring fundraising events benefitting Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund; and
Obtaining additional personal protective equipment and supplies to keep the staff safe, too.
The PMC raises more money for charity than any other single event in the country, $717 million since 1980 and $63 million in 2019 alone! This success is the result of a lot of people riding for, and caring about, a cure. And because every penny matters, 100 percent of your donation goes to DFCI.
The I've made a personal commitment to ride PMC 2020 and raise $12,000.00. I hope you can help me achieve this significant goal.
Will you do your part to help our children and grandchildren and so many others benefit from the research and delivery of treatments and prevention being done at the Dana-Farber? To make your tax-deductible contribution please log on to www.pmc.org, select Donate, and search for Martin Rogers or eGift ID # MR0111. If you prefer to send a check please make it out to PMC/Jimmy Fund and send to Marty Rogers, 47 Glenridge Drive, Bedford, MA 01730.
Thank you for your support, stay safe and well, and we will all come through this together.
