Dear Team,
After a very cold and snowy winter I am happy to announce I finally brushed the cobwebs off my PMC bike and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! Yes I know my father, Paul, would have been riding all winter. I only aspire to be the man he was. If you are getting this letter you already know I am seeking your support in my effort to ride the PMC in honor of my father. What you don’t know is what has changed in the past year and where your support and contributions have gone.
Pedal 4 Paul is entering its 4th year and maybe our most exciting. In the past 3 years you have helped P4P raise over $34,000 for Cancer Research at the Dana Farber contributing to the $41M that the PMC raised last year alone. This year we are committed to 4 riders in a grueling 110 miles Day 1, and 6 riders for a leisurely 88 mile Day 2. We will have 2 new riders joining our ranks, and many familiar faces. There are still spots open for day 2! Just as a side note we are adding an optional ride. A tradition we started last year called “Pauli’s ride.” After the second day at the end of the event I am riding an additional 20 miles to ensure 100 miles. After all that’s what my father would have done J.
In 2014 we shared some good news in the pancreatic cancer research field with significant advances with new drugs that are being rushed through the clinical phase by the FDA and given breakthrough status. We have also seen tremendous growth in the attention for this disease. The PANCAN organization is currently lobbying congress to support clinical research and fund awareness programs. Please see PANCAN.Org for more information.
What a winter! I think my father would have loved it. He took a great deal of pleasure in dealing with the elements and working with them. I have a lot of fond memories of him tinkering with bikes in the garage all winter. He rode to work the whole winter he was getting chemo! I actually remember late spring. It was still cold, and the snow was melting, the road was dark and pot-holed. My father rode right in the one of those pot-holes and went right over the handle bars! He was black and blue and little banged up, but rode to work the next day. His doctor thought he was insane. There are a few lessons to be learned here, but the one I like is that when we fall we get back up and we keep riding.
I will keep riding, and not a day goes by that I am not thankful for the person my father helped me to become. I aspire to have the same determination and willingness to work with the elements around me. When I ride I do feel close to him.
Help support me in my PMC ride and honor my father’s memory.
Pedal4Paul is now in its fourth year! In 2014 we had over 180 committed and generous supporters. This year I am hoping double our supporters. Everyone is encouraged to be part of the cause. You can donate through the link below, and if that’s not enough or not in your budget please ask me how I can help you get involved.
See you on the road,
