As I approach my Fifth PMC, I am struck by the feeling of luck that I have enjoyed over the past year. I was able to travel with my bride Wanda (who continues put up with me for unknown reasons). We enjoyed trips to Austria and Switzerlad with our fellow travelling Pitou friends. Later, Wanda, Caroline, Tricia, Dennis and Josie gathered in Salt Lake City, Utah with some of our Loon friends for a ski vacation, which included my effervescent granddaughter Luna. My partners and my colleagues at the Sheff Law Offices have supported me in my endeavors. My close friends at Loon and LMSS skied my tail off and listened patiently to my boring stories. I have enjoyed the comradery of of the great coaches and teamates at CrossFit Free. I have looked forward to cycling this year more than ever. I am a lucky man.
But my luck isn't just confined to these very important people in my life. I am Living Proof that cancer(s) can be overcome. With the help of the great doctors, nurses and the medical teams at Dana Farber and Brigham and Women's, I have been successfully treated for cancer TWICE in the past ten years. Early detections, early treatments dramatically increased my odds for survival from prostate and renal cancer. Surgical treatment has physicaly removed the cancer. I have been extremely fortunate throughout this process. I was never sick from cancer symptoms. I never missed a day from work due to cancer (except for the surgery to eradicate cancer). I never questioned my survival. I was able to travel parts of the world. I am able to hug my wife, my daughters, my grandaughter, my family and my friends. I actually became more active physically. I WAS (AND REMAIN) LUCKY.
But surviving cancer and thriving afterward should not be a question of luck. We need to find answers for all people so that luck has no role in living through cancer. We need research. We need to support and to grow new ideas and pathways to diagnose and to treat all forms of cancer . We need available early detection methods. We need timely access to treatment and interventions. We need treatments for all stages. We need cures. For everyone. Not just the Lucky...
I need your support. I can cover the minimum myself. It's how I give back to those who saved my life twice. Your support means more money for research. We can eradicate cancer in our lifetime. That's the most important reason why I PMC. I will try to give back. Sheff Law Offices will continue to support me (Thanks, Doug, Frank and the rest of the SLO tribe). We are proud supporters of the PMC because it is leading a charge to beat cancer. In fact, last year 100% of rider-raised revenue went directly to support the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's tireless commitment to finding a cure for cancer. The doctors supported by Team Perry take on the most recalcitrant cancers, the hard ones. They are looking for screening procedures; they are looking for cures. They will defeat pancreatic, colon and other hard GI cancers.
To Wanda and and my family, I love you and thank you. To SLO, thank you. To my Loon, LMSS and Pitou compatriots, thank you. To my CFF buddies, thank you. To my Team Perry riders, thanks. You have all suppprted me and I know you will continue to do so. To all my other suppoprters, I thank you as well.
Please help me give back. Please help the people that haven't been lucky yet. Please help others so that early detection, treatment and cure will be available to all patients, not just the lucky. I'll see you out there on the road.
